Everything is connected. My current work is influenced by this basic idea. Using a single sheet of black paper, I cut to reveal an image where nature, animals, humans, life, work, responsibilities, pre-occupations, and passions are woven together. The intricacy of the connections is critical for the work to 'hang' together – both literally and metaphorically.
Having grown up in India where many styles of folk art is part of everyday life – I am inclined to find inspirations for making art in ordinary places, objects, and interactions. I was surrounded and nurtured by women in our family and community who created fine embroideries using nature motifs. During the annual festival of Diwali, we made giant sand paintings to welcome the gods and the guests.
In telling one story in a particular setting, I hope to speak in a common language about cultural and personal associations. Infusing the ordinary with mythological representation is my way of bringing hidden meanings to the surface.
